ADDICTIONS

It is hard to write about how I help those with addiction, because I know that addiction is a disease that often tells us we don’t have a disease.

There is help. Every addict hears this and feels, somewhere inside of them, “yeh, yeh … you just don’t get it – help will be something like ‘just stop using’ or some other junk I can’t use”.  Of course YOU ARE RIGHT in a way. And – well – there is help anyway. My experience has showed me this and my clients have been great teachers too over the years. I am sure that will continue.

Addictions are not easy to live with. They eat your life while they tell you that they are saving you from unbearable suffering or offering remarkable fun –or both. Many people with addictions feel they are special - more sensitive and perceptive than others. Often, I’ve found, they are. Their addictions will still destroy them if they don’t seek help or help themselves. And that destruction can be sudden - an accident or another related illness. But by far most of the time it is slow, painful, desperate (at least at moments when we aren’t drug affected), and just plain painful. To kill ourselves, even if it is only “emotionally”, while trying to survive - this is not fun.

I know how to help addicts - whether they are addicted to alcohol or oxycontin. I have never met a person with the disease of addiction that wanted to be addicted. Heck, we like using alcohol and/or drugs too much to want to be addicted and have them turn against us!  If you want help please call me. We will have to work together, but if you want recovery, we can and likely will succeed.

There are people who are addicted to alcohol and/or drugs who do not want to stop. I understand this. Even though an addiction can ruin or even kill someone, I do believe it is a very personal choice about recovery. Just because we are addicted does not mean we do not own our lives or are not entitled to make decisions about them.
