Over the last 2 decades I have provided supervision services to many individuals, supervision groups, and institutions. I enjoy this work very much. Overall, if you are interested in supervision, whether it be to acquire or hone a specialty, improve your breadth of practice as a clinician, or for the process of licensure in the Psychology, Mental Health, or the Substance Abuse field, feel free to call and talk with me about how I conceive of and provide supervision services.
I am certain that no two clinicians are the same. We may share similar theoretical bases for our work and a similar conception of the therapy space, the frame, and ethical practice. Or, in some or many of these areas we may be quite different. In truth, I learn as much from my supervisee’s as I hope they learn from me (and hope those I seek supervision from feel the same way!). We, as people and as clinicians, are the vehicle of what we present and can create. We are all different, and that means that not one of us can do the same work as another. Yet, we each can be expert and capable and ethical in our ways of helping others.
Harry Stack Sullivan, a great American psychiatrist asserted that the therapist has an obligation to be expert. He also suggested that anyone can conduct an interview (session), but a good interviewer notices changes in the interviewee during the interview, but an expert interviewer notices changes in the interviewee during the interview that are in response to changes in the interviewer, or therapist.
Focusing on our ability to be aware and always intentional in what we do, to have excellent boundaries, and to empower the client to create solutions within the therapy frame that can translate to their lives outside therapy – this way of seeing things has offered me a vision of supervision that allows for an honoring of many different approaches by a supervisee. Please give me a call and we can talk about supervision if you are interested. I provide supervision for licensed practitioners, as well as licensing track clinicians.
