Specialty Areas of Practice

I specialize in the outpatient treatment of substance abuse. I have been affiliated with the University of Vermont Substance Abuse Treatment Center for over 10 years and have special expertise in the area of Opiate use. I have extensive experience with the use of Buprenorphine and Methadone for the treatment of opioid dependence. I also provide Drug and Alcohol Assessments and counseling for the Teen Alcohol Safety Program (Court Diversion) and counseling for the CRASH Program (DUI offenders) as well as local college students in violation of school drug and alcohol policy. I contract with Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) to provide short term assessment and treatment of mental health/substance abuse issues.

Modalities of Treatment

I mainly use cognitive-behavior and behavior therapy to treat both short and long term issues. I see my role as a therapist as helping my clients to: 1. identify non-productive patterns of thought and behavior, 2. explore and decide on alternatives that might be more effective ways of dealing with situations, and 3. become motivated to put these changes into practice and evaluate them. I emphasize the difference between committing to changing a behavior and merely trying to change it. I also incorporate skills training (e.g. communication, relaxation) and home work assignments into the therapy process.

Insurances

I accept most insurance and managed care plans, including Medicaid, VHAP, Dr. Dinosaur and Medicare.
